Agoo Apparel - Review

Photobucket

While browsing the web the other day, I came across Agoo Apparel. Their tag line - Clothes for Active Kids - immediately caught my eye. Both my kids are very active (yes, even my baby girl!!) and their clothes are usually unable to stand up to the rough wear and tear they put them through. It seems like I'm in the store every other day buying them clothes! So these clothes looked ideal for my kids. What impressed me most was this :
Agoo® is uniquely styled athletic wear for urban kids. It is functional, fashionable and makes being a kid a lot more fun. It is not cutesy or cartoony. It is what you would wear yourself, comfortable and chic, but for kids on the move living healthy lifestyles. Our key component is our fabrics. They contain a strong UV protected finish, blocking out any harmful ultra violet rays. No matter how many times you wash it or expose it to sunlight or saltwater, the protection is always there. We felt this made an ideal fabric so we developed a complete line that would allow your kids to stay out and play a little longer.... To keep with the idea of comfort, our fabrics have Wick Away fibers that pull moisture and sweat away from the body, and move it to the surface. No more chills or over heating, this feature keeps kids cool and dry all at the same time.
PhotobucketNow that's what clothing for kids should be all about, especially with Summer being out there in full force! I immediately contacted them about reviewing their products and they were kind enough to send me a pair of LegHuggers for my baby.

Innovative and eco-friendly Leg Huggers are made from 100% sustainable Bamboo fibres. One size fits all! So I can use it even my baby begins to crawl, when she's toilet training and even beyond! They're soft to the touch, stretchy and most of all, are a great combination of form and function.

But that's not all. They have a range of clothes for kids of all ages. For more information as well as to buy their clothes, just visit http://www.agoo4u.com/

Book Tour - Frankie the Walk 'n Roll Dog

Today I'm pleased to welcome Barb Techel, author of Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog, to Mommy Reviewed! Barb 's guest post here today is part of this book's virtual tour, courtesy Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tours.

I never intended to be an author. But when Frankie suffered a spinal injury in 2006 and became paralyzed, I learned many life lessons from her.

PhotobucketI was very uneducated in the disease that dachshunds suffer from which is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). So when Frankie ruptured a disc in her back I thought my only option was to put her to sleep. That is when I realized surgery was an option, though the surgeon had only given her a 10-30% chance of walking again.

Thinking those were not great odds, I asked the surgeon, “What will her life be like if she does not walk again?”

She said, “These little dogs do very well. If she does not gain use of her back legs again she can be fit for a doggie wheelchair.”

I was completely surprised because I had never known they made wheelchairs for dogs! So there really was no question that I had to give the surgery a shot, and see what would happen.

Frankie went through physical therapy and had to have strict cage rest for eight weeks. After three months I was told statistically if Frankie showed not improvement in her legs chances were she would not walk again. That is when we ordered the wheelchair for her. The rest really is history because Frankie regained her freedom, and forward she went, never missing a beat.

So, as I said, I never intended to be an author, but realizing I had an opportunity to educate others, as well as share Frankie’s story of hope, I just knew I had to do this. It is so interesting how this all unfolded, and how we must pay attention when the universe is sending us signals.

I had begun writing more seriously in 2005 after my chocolate lab, Cassie Jo, had been diagnosed with bone cancer. I had been yearning to do something that would make a difference in others lives. I wanted to leave a legacy behind. Because of Cassie Jo’s terminal diagnoses I decided to pursue writing about animals. I was fortunate enough to land a writing gig for our local paper and had my own column called, “For the Love of Animals.”

That was so fun writing that column! It made me think that maybe I should write a book someday based on my inner journey because of Cassie Jo. I had all those intentions and goals in mind when there was a fork in the road presented to me, which was Frankie’s accident.

After some more soul searching that is when I realized my calling was to write Frankie’s story. There was, and never has been any doubt this is what I was brought here to do.

So even though I was absolutely devastated when Frankie was initially hurt, I realized it was up to me to look for the blessing in our situation. By taking that fork in the road that was presented I have been lead down a path I never expected. It has held rewards of compassion, love and kindness that I am so very grateful for.

Thank you for that entertaining post, dear Author! Readers, your thoughts / comments are most welcome.

Frecklebox

Looking for a perfect birthday party favor? Or, a special gift for your nephew? Children love receiving gifts, but even more exciting for them is receiving a personalized gift that they can call their very own. Frecklebox, an online source for unique and personalized gifts, has increased their product line to add even more personalized gift-giving options.

Frecklebox (www.frecklebox.com) has added personalized stickers and puzzles to their current line of customized children’s gifts, which also includes personalized books, coloring books, posters, journal books, placemats, growth charts and party favors.  The new Frecklebox additions are ideal for party favors, birthdays and other special occasions for children, and are a fun option over the standard candy and toys.  The new personalized stickers feature the child’s name and are available in 12 different themes.  Frecklebox now also offers eleven different personalized puzzle options, each prominently featuring the child’s name and containing 20 cardboard pieces. Frecklebox allows you to add a special touch to children’s gifts, making the child feel important and special.

I used Frecklebox to customize a book for my toddler, to celebrate his becoming a big brother. It had his name on it, plus a message from me to him, a wonderful photo of his and some other personalized touches. He was very intrigued to open a book and see his own photo inside! But it was his grandparents who were bowled over with that gorgeous, personalized gift!

Kids Konserve - Review

PhotobucketLike any parent, keeping my child safe and healthy is of paramount concern for me. Buying organic food, and using "green" and safe items whenever possible is one of the ways I go about it. And being BPA-free is a must in when I go buy stuff for my kids. Now that my toddler is going to pre-school (sort of!) I was browsing online looking for something safe to pack his lunch in. That's when I came across a wonderful site called Kids Konserve which offers a complete line of reusable food storage options from complete waste-free lunch kits to individual reusable containers and beverage bottles, all made from the safest, non-leaching, bisphenol-A free (BPA) lead free and phthalate free materials.

One of their best-sellers (which they sent me for review) is the Food Kozy. They're a great reusable alternative to plastic baggies, plastic wrap and foil, that all ends up in the trash, and quite often our landfills. I use them to wrap sandwiches for Kiddo to take to lunch at school, but they're also perfect to pack all summer snacks in. My kid reports that the sandwiches keep well, there is no "strange" smell as is the case with plastic baggies and the velcro tabs make it a breeze to open and close, even for his tiny toddler hands. My only beef with them is that they don't hold multiple sandwiches well, especially when they're made with thick bread slices. I just wish they came in bigger sizes for bigger food. The current solution is to buy more of these Food Kozies and they're easily affordable at $25 for a set of 5. Just imagine the amount of paper, plastic etc that you're not going to throw in trash and potentially harm Mother Earth, with this easy, green and practical solution! The Food Kozy is also easy to wash - just rinse/wash in the sink and air dry in minutes.

They have a lot of other great products over at Kids Konserve like recycled Canvas sacks, Stainless steel bottles (now these are a great alternative to plastic bottles/sippy cups and have great designs), Stainless steel food containers etc. I particularly liked the idea of their "LARGE TIFFIN" which is a unique, Stackable food carrying bento box. (I really, really wanted them to send this item for review as I myself had a version of it to take to school, but alas...)

So save the green in your wallet and in Nature by visiting Kids Konserve and getting something that's safe and eco-friendly at the same time.

Buy it! Kids Konserve products are all available on their website www.kidskonserve.com and in select retail locations. See their website for list of stores. Currently they're offering  a discount of 25% off the Food Kozy pack of 5. Just use the coupon code: "Kozy25". This code is valid through Sept 09.

Poo-Pourri Jr - Review

Photobucket As I often joke, with two kids in diapers, my nose cells are pretty much dead! But in reality, it's not funny at all. I have to often resort to lighting my aromatherapy candles or room deodorizers to mask the smell of poopy diapers! What the candles are is an expensive waste, as they do nothing more than momentarily mask the smell and the deodorizer's smell in combination with the diaper stink creates an olfactory monster that's utterly unbearable.

The solution came in the form of an offer to review a brand-new product called The Poo-Pourri Jr. It's a soiled diaper deodorizer with natural anti-bacterial essential oils such as Bergamot, Leomongrass and Grapefruit. And it comes from the makers of the popular Poo-Pourri adult spray! That was enough to convince me.

The main reason I liked this product is that Poo~Pourri Jr's formula contains a revolutionary odor counteractant to neutralize odors at the source and refresh air. Plus the all-natural essential oils in Poo-Pourri Jr. trap odors and doesn’t leave any behind. Simply spray Poo-Pourri Jr. on dirty diapers before disposal and there will be no reminder that my little angel was once a stinker. This convenient spray is also perfect to take on the go in my diaper bag!

Buy it! Poo-Pourri Jr. is available in a 4 oz. bottle for $12.96 and an 8 oz. bottle for $19.95.  It is available for purchase at www.poopourri.com as well as through retailers nationwide.

Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully by Julianne Moore

PhotobucketFreckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully: A Freckleface Strawberry Story by Julianne Moore
Ages 4-8, 40 p, Bloomsbury, ISBN-13: 978-1599903163

Acclaimed actress, and now beloved picture book author JULIANNE MOORE and bestselling illustrator LeUyen Pham join talents again for FRECKLEFACE STRAWBERRY AND THE DODGEBALL BULLY. This time, their perky, loveable seven-year-old encounters a bully on the playground-Windy Pants Patrick-during a game of dodgeball. As the brute prepares to hurl his might at Freckleface and her friends, she must figure out how to summon the courage to stand up to him. Ms. Moore tackles this all-to- prevalent problem with both humor and grace.

PhotobucketIt is Ms. Moore's infusion of hilarity and heart that has won her praise from booksellers, educators, reviewers-and most importantly young readers!-for her debut picture book Freckleface Strawberry, a charming tale inspired by a childhood experience.

Nicknamed Freckleface Strawberry when she a young girl, Ms. Moore disliked the title as much as she disliked her red hair and freckles. "As a child, my hatred of my freckles was only matched by my love of reading," said the author, who eventually grew to tolerate her red hair and freckles and find amusement in telling her own kids abouther childhood nickname. Dodgeball isn't based on personal experience, but creating a feisty character who makes the best of a bad situation-and does so with style and wit-is essential to Ms. Moore.

Book Review - Along Came You

Lots of changes happen when kids enter the picture. Briefcases are traded for diaper bags. Silk business scarves are set aside for fluffy dress-up boas. When career women have kids, it isn't just their schedules that change: they get to be kids again, too.

Karona Drummond can relate to changing her world to accommodate the arrival of kids. Her new book, "Along Came You" (Zonderkidz, April 2009, 978-0-310-71508-5, $15.99, Hardcover), celebrates the joys of having children and how big changes come with parenthood.

"Our lives have many chapters," says Drummond, mother of two elementary-aged children. "If we're blessed to have a chapter called 'parenthood,' enjoy! It's busy, exhausting and fun. It's like nothing else in the world."

"Along Came You" is a children's picture book following a mother who tells her daughter what life was like before she was born and how she makes her world rich. Drummond draws from the new things her own children brought about, from the stylish home décor that once graced the walls to the handmade art her kids replaced it with.

"There are many moments I have cherished with my children," Drummond says. "For example, the look on your child's face when she's finally big enough to ride the roller coaster is priceless. I love huge, 100 mile-per-hour loop-de-loop coasters, but it was an even bigger thrill to sit next to my daughter as she rode the little 10 mile-per-hour, one teeny-hill coaster in kiddie land for the very first time."

Brightly illustrated with endearing images of the mother-daughter relationship, Drummond and illustrator Estelle Corke show the beautiful transition from life without kids to the richness kids bring.

Karona Drummond has spent more than two decades in education. Drummond is a home-based teacher and serves as an instructor for a home-school enrichment program. Her collection of works includes stories for young children, as well as inspirational poetry for adults. Drummond's story "The Running Years," about the memories she has of exercising with her father, was chosen for the "Hats Off to Dads" section of the Tejas Storytelling Festival. Today, Drummond enjoys coaching soccer, creating engaging activities for her children and spending time with her family. She lives in Denton, Texas.

A Summer to Remember

Article : Saved By the Bell - A Summer to Remember by Sharon Lovejoy Autry

The final bell rang. The kids screamed for joy. Mom sits in the carpool line wondering, "What in the world are we going to do all summer?!"

Maybe as summer has begun, you've found yourself resentful and angry because your children constantly "interrupt" your schedule. If that's how you're feeling, you're normal.

But, wait. We wanted these kids, right? Are they really interruptions or blessings in disguise? How can we move from simply surviving the summer to making it a summer to remember?

Here are a few ideas to get you out of the summer survival rut:
1. Realize they won't be this way forever. What is it about your kids that you won't have in two years?

If you are a parent of:

  • Preschoolers: Look at their hands and notice how tiny they are. Enjoy that.
  • Elementary children: When you're away from home, call them. Their voices sound small on the phone. That always reminds me to enjoy their innocence rather than expecting them to act like little grown-ups.
  • Tweens: Laugh at and enjoy their giggles (usually girls) and the fascination they have with being gross (usually boys)! Hopefully that won't last forever!
  • Teens: Even if they are driving you crazy, make your home the safe place. I still remember the fun place our parents created at home. It was our refuge. Let kids feel safe in your home by cutting down on the criticism and looking for ways to build them up. Mom and Dad's secret was a ping-pong table. We spent hours there.
2. Say "no" with a smile. It makes you and your child feel better. They know you have some regret at having to say no. You are on their team.

3. Play music. Anger and music don't usually dance. Movie soundtracks, praise songs, music from my teen years or even classical stations. I rarely find myself upset with my kids when we have music playing in the background.

4. Go outside. Sometimes taking a walk or bike ride with the kids can do wonders to change everyone's perspective.

5. Things aren't always as they seem. Remember that the way you are seeing things at this moment is probably not how it will look in a couple of hours. Frustrations can build and dissolve quickly when you have kids.

6. Offer them 30 minutes of your time. After they have helped pick up around the house let them pick what the two of you will do together and watch their eyes light up! For older kids, offer them the day off after helping for an hour.

7. Ask your kids what they think is fun. You might be surprised to find that their idea of fun often doesn't cost any money. My sister was amazed to find that her 7-year-old son's idea of "fun" was playing tag in the front yard with dad, mom and his little sister.

8. Slow down. Successful parenting doesn't mean you have your children involved in every possible extra-curricular activity. Successful parenting means you are there for them. If you've been running all year, it takes "practice" to enjoy staying home. Don't give up. Turn off the computer, TV, cell phone, etc. and read or play games (no matter what the age of your children).

9. Pray. When you are at your wit's end, ask God to help you remember what to do with your kids. On our own, it's hard to enjoy the moments because "life happens." But God has a way of giving us perspective that will slow us down and help us see our families the way He sees them: with love and compassion.

The next time you blow your top or realize you're just surviving your kids instead of enjoying their clumsy feet, silliness, or their constant desire to talk on the phone, stop and think, "one day I'll miss this!" The funny thing is, tomorrow we'll be longing for today. If we choose to think like that long enough, the kids won't be the only ones sad to hear the school bell ring this fall.

Lansinoh Diaper Rash Cream

Photobucket
Diaper rash is hard on babies, and treating it has been hard on moms and dads with ointments that are messy, greasy, and stain clothing. Lansinoh Laboratories, Inc., one of the world’s most popular brands among breastfeeding mothers, has introduced Lansinoh® Diaper Rash Ointment. This exclusive new formulation, which includes Lansinoh’s world-renowned HPA® Lanolin, treats diaper rash gently and effectively. I was excited and happy when offered an opportunity to review this new product from a company I'd come to trust through my first-hand, excellent experience of their nipple cream.

Here are the reasons why I'm now a fan of their Diaper Rash Ointment as well -

  • Unlike other zinc oxide products, Lansinoh® Diaper Rash Ointment has an elegant non-greasy texture so it applies smoothly and gently to baby’s delicate skin.
  • What I loved most about this product is that it goes on white, so you know where you applied it, but it rubs on clear, so there is no mess on your hands, clothing or baby!
  • And then it washes right off parents’ hands.
  • In addition to strong, lasting protection, Lansinoh® Diaper Rash Ointment is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic – so my baby smells like my baby and not like diaper rash ointment!

Buy it! To celebrate launch of its new product, Lansinoh is offering a coupon for $2.00 off at www.diapers.com using the code LANSINOH2. Lansinoh® Diaper Rash Ointment is also available at retailers including Walgreens and Babies R Us, and online at www.Walgreens.com, www.BabiesRUs.com, and www.Diapers.com.

For more information about Lansinoh and its product line, visit www.Lansinoh.com or call 1-800-292-4794.

The Natural Dentist

As readers of this blog know by now, I'm a fan of all things organic and natural. And there are many others like me out there. However what I've commonly seen is that while people are concerned with what they eat and put on their skin and in their hair, there is little attention to the fact they are putting chemicals into their mouths two times a day just by using regular toothpastes and mouth rinses. There are natural oral care alternatives that work just as well as non-natural brands without alcohol, harsh chemicals, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, detergents, bleach, or dyes.

PhotobucketOne such comes is The Natural Dentist - a thirteen year-old natural oral care company,, built on uniquely powerful, clinically proven natural mouth rinse and toothpaste formulations

About The Natural Dentist products:

  • Provide superior performance – cleaning, whitening, cavity prevention, and fresh breath
  • Contain natural ingredients for healthy teeth and gums
  • Grapefruit seed extract and menthol cleanse the mouth
  • Peppermint and sage oils help prevent gingivitis and reduce/prevent plaque
  • Bamboo powder is used for whitening and stain removal
  • Aloe vera gel for soothing gums and keeping the mouth healthy
  • Contain Xylitol (10%), a dentist-recommended natural cleansing agent and sweetener sourced from corn wood (corn cobs)
  • Offer Fluoride for cavity prevention (and a fluoride-free options too)

PhotobucketI was sent their Healthy Teeth Toothpaste – Sparkle Berry Blast, Healthy Teeth & Gums Fluoride-Free – Peppermint Sage and the Healthy Teeth & Gums Whitening Plus Toothpaste - Peppermint Twist, ranked #1 Natural Whitening Toothpaste by a leading independent consumer publication - for review. I loved the taste of the Peppermint Sage toothpaste and it left my mouth feeling fresh and clean and my mind at rest knowing I wasn't putting dangerous chemicals in my mouth. Same for the Whitening toothpaste, which whitens teeth with a breakthrough polishing silica that gently removes surface stains. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel to protect against cavities. The Sparkle Berry Blast is a kid's gel that's made without SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), a detergent that can irritate tender mouths. It contains xylitol, a natural cleansing agent recommended by dentists that sweetens without promoting tooth decay.

All their toothpastes come with No box, thus eliminating excess packaging and they come in stand-up tubes for convenience on the sink! Natural flavors, natural colors, natural ingredients - that's The Natural Dentist for you!

Buy It! The Natural Dentist wants to make it a little easier for folks to go the natural route when it comes to oral care. The brand recently announced a drop in retail prices (up to 30%) for all mouth rinses to make natural oral care more accessible. This includes the Antigingivitis Rinse, Pre-Brush Whitening Rinse, Healthy Gums Mouth Rinse, Healthy Teeth Anticavity Fluoride Rinse and Healthy Teeth Fluoride Rinse. These rinses have decreased from $9.99 to a suggested retail price of $6.99 for a 16-ounce bottle.

For a limited time only, The Natural Dentist is offering a coupon for $1.50 off any product from The Natural Dentist line of toothpastes or mouth rinses. This coupon can be found at: www.thenaturaldentist.com/pricecut.

Five Tips for Living Life Well

Marlise Karlin (www.marlisekarlin.com), a person just like you and me who focuses on rebooting people by experiencing The Simplicity of Stillness®, offers simple tips for living life well that cost nothing, but are invaluable in making the journey of life more enjoyable and balanced.

Marlise offers Five Tips for Living Life Well:

#1:  Breathe Into the Moment

In the midst of a busy day, take a few moments to find stillness.  Slow your pace, breathe deep, and refocus your attention away from the mind-chatter.  Instead, reflect on what is most meaningful to you in life, and carry those inspirational thoughts with you throughout your day.

#2: Take Inspired Action

Being in constant reaction mode will leave you feeling exhausted & unfulfilled. After taking a moment of reflection and stillness, follow through with the necessary steps to achieve the goals you set forth for the day.  If a disruption occurs, acknowledge it and look for a solution, rather than allowing it to derail you.  Notice how your new focus helps you to stay on track with greater ease.

#3:  Water Your Garden

Truly acknowledge the people in your life for the value they bring to you and the world. As with a garden, relationships need to be nurtured and appreciated.  With even a sprinkling, the relationship will bloom – and the beauty of what is given will return to you tenfold.

#4 Be Aware of Your Attitude

Notice how you feel and how you radiate those feelings outward.  If you have a positive attitude, people will not only gravitate to you, but it might even help change the attitude of others from negative to positive.  If you are projecting love, generosity and hope, others may follow your lead.  Realize how what you give comes back to you!

#5 Make Choices

Acknowledge that you have the ability to make choices that will keep you moving forward toward your overall vision, rather than letting other people, or life’s circumstances distract you from staying focused on what matters most.  Choose what moves you toward your goals that give you the greatest rewards – inside and out.

“People are running at a hundred miles an hour, racing with the clock, trying to squeeze in ways to stay healthy and fit,” said Marlise Karlin. “It’s important to realize it only takes a few minutes a day to completely reboot ourselves by nurturing both mind & body to become more balanced and healthy.”

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Raising Girls

Photobucket
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Raising Girls
ISBN: 9781592578818, April 2009, $14.95
Authors:  Dr. Gary J. Weisenberger Cleveland, OH, Kathy Sherwin Albany, NY, and Deborah S. Romaine Port Townsend, WA

Ever since the publication of Reviving Ophelia in 1994, and continuing through 2003, when both Odd Girl Out and Queen Bees & Wannabes were published in trade paperback, parents and the public have been aware that adolescent girls were growing up in a “girl-poisoning” culture, threatened by schools, the media, and each other.  But middle school and the teen years are too late for parents to be as supportive as they ought to be.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Raising Girls offers suggestions, tips, and solid parenting advice for every stage of the growing-up years, including;

•The real differences between girls and boys
•Mommy’s helper, Daddy’s little angel, tomboy or princess – raising a daughter who isn’t afraid to be her own person
•Girls at school and play
•The many firsts in a girl’s life – best friend, menstrual period, boyfriend, and more
•Girls in the middle – school, that is
•Music, reading, TV, and texting – the media and their messages for girls
•High school and beyond – this girl is a woman now

Dr. Gary J. Weisenberger, is a board-certified pediatrician of 22 years with Group Health Associates in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He is a former President of the Medical and Dental staff at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Cincinnati Pediatric Society.  He is the proud father (and grandfather) of girls. He is a contributor to Leading Physicians through Change (2000).

Kathy Sherwin is an educator with 15 years experience teaching English at Guilderland High School in the Capital District area of New York. She was recognized as an Educator of Excellence in 2003 by the New York State English Council, and has worked as a consultant for the New York State Education Department to develop standards-based resource materials for educators. She is currently a teacher for grades 10 and 11 and is also serving as the teacher leader for her department. She is the mother of two daughters ages 6 and 10.

Deborah S. Romaine is a health writer and mother of a teenage daughter. She is senior writer of the four-volume Facts On File Encyclopedia of Health and Medicine, as well as co-author of dozens of books including The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to Changing Bad Habits for Good. She lives with her husband, daughter, son, and four cats on Washington State’s beautiful Olympic Peninsula.

Article - The Ten Commandments Of Parenting Teenagers

The Ten Commandments Of Parenting Teenagers
By Joanne Kimes and R.J. Colleary with Rebecca Rutledge, PhD,
Authors of Teenagers Suck: What to do when missed curfews, texting, and "Mom can I have the keys?" make you miserable

As we all know and regret deeply, kids aren't born with instruction manuals informing us of the intricacies of how they work. As parents, our only option is to learn as we go. When our kids were babies, we learned to nap when they napped, to put valuables up on the high shelves, and that m&ms make excellent bribing tools when potty training. But now that your baby is no longer a baby (although he still may act that way from time to time), there is a whole new set of instructions to learn.

Parenting a teenager is a fulltime job, because being a teenager is also a fulltime job. Sure, they may busy themselves with school, sports, and text-messaging, but their true raison-d'etre is to perpetuate their teenager-ness 24/7. Which means while you are slacking off doing things like breathing and living, your teenagers are doing things like plotting and scheming. (They will throw in some sleeping as well, what with being teenagers and all.) Because their lives are all about them, and yours is all about working, cooking, cleaning, paying the taxes, and still finding time for Dancing With The Stars, they have the upper hand.

Were you ever a lifeguard? Me neither. As Woody Allen once said, I don't tan; I stroke. But as any lifeguard will tell you, the biggest threat to their personal safety is not a riptide or a shark. It's a swimmer in trouble. Yes, the very person they are dedicated to help will, in their own panic and hysteria, threaten to destroy them both. Sound familiar? That's because you're the parent of a teenager.

When babies, your children caused you to become sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and drink excessively. Now that they're older, they still cause you to become sleep deprived, overwhelmed, and drink excessively. As you've heard, the more things change, the more they stay the same, and that holds true for parenting as well. So how do you survive? How do you get through each day with the constant screaming, crying and demands (I'm talking about from your teens, not your babies). You follow the rules of course. For as lost as you may feel parenting your teens, there are some guidelines to follow to help you keep your sanity. Or, what's left of your sanity after parenting for so many years.

Therefore, to help you deal with your troublesome teen, keep the following rules in mind:

The Ten Commandments Of Parenting Teenagers

  1. You are always right. And if you're not always right, it's because your parents messed you up when you were a kid
  2. Praise in public, criticize in private. Most people do the opposite. Don't be like most people.
  3.  Yes, you do have to tell them a thousand times. Stop counting and get over it. Now tell them again.
  4. Your teens are smarter than you think, and stronger than you realize. So don't go acting all superior just because you have wrinkles and credit cards.
  5. Remember they are growing up a lot faster than you did. Advantage, you. Growing up fast is way overrated.
  6. When they really screw up is when they need you most. If your parents comforted you in those situations, remember how good it felt? And if they didn't, remember how much worse it made you feel?
  7. Their defeats are 50% yours, but their victories are 100% theirs. Not exactly sure what that means, it showed up in a fortune cookie. But it feels true.
  8. Remind yourself, they won't be teenagers forever. Someday you will look back on these years and laugh. Definitely. Probably. Maybe.
  9. Love them enough to let them hate you. Don't be their friend. Be their parent. Friends come and go. You're all-in.
  10. Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you bleed internally.
  11. (Bonus Commandment) You can do this.

If you keep these commandments in mind, you'll be much better equipped to tread through the dangerous road of teenhood. These rules will enable you to survive the tough times filled with defiance, rebellion, and constant eye-rolling. Like anything else from working a remote control to getting through airport security, familiarizing yourself with the rules will makes things run much smoother (although I still manage to carry-on some forbidden article like one too many ounces of liquid, that sends me straight to the frisking area). Print out this list of commandments and keep it close. Stick it on the fridge for battles at home. Keep it in your wallet to for troubles on-the-go. And remember, if you can manage to get through this difficult stage of raising teenagers, in a few years when they move out, you'll be rewarded with a lovely spare bedroom to convert into your dream room!
